Make sure the cut off is working. Coil is probably the culprit in not running when hot. Another may be a slightly clogged fuel line. Then while cranking the engine, key off, hold you hand over the carburetor intake and see if sucking air in. Then try spraying some starting fluid in there and see if it responds at all. I think that's vapor you see coming out of the carburetor not smoke.
